What to expect at your first treatment?
At your first visit the practitioner will take a detailed case history. This will include questions about your past medical history, your lifestyle and emotional state. This is to make sure the practitioner has a full picture of your general health and to ensure the reflexology will not interfere with any other treatments. You will be asked to remove your shoes and socks and will be seated in a comfortable semi-reclining chair. The practitioner will apply firm thumb or finger pressure to the reflex points on your feet (or occasionally your hands) until every reflex has been worked. Areas that represent a part of your body that is out of balance may feel tender or 'gritty'. The more sensitive the reflex the greater the imbalance. If out of balance areas are found the reflexologist will pay special attention to these areas.
A reflexology treatment is usually applied via the feet but can be applied to the hands in some cases. This is usually if the feet are too tender to treat, in cases where one or both feet have been amputated or where mobility is poor so access to the feet is difficult. A hand reflexology treatment is just as effective as foot reflexology but may be a little shorter in duration due to the reduced surface area.
How long will my treatment last?
Your treatment should last for 55 minutes in addition to an initial consultation period. A course of three to eight treatments taken at weekly or fortnightly intervals is generally recommended to balance up your whole body but this can vary depending on your overall health, the nature of any conditions you may have and the length of time you have had them.
The treatment should feel very pleasant and relaxing, similar to a gentle massage. The pressure applied will be firm, so the treatment should not tickle, nor should it hurt. As a special indulgence Hayley concludes each treatment with a relaxing foot massage using an intensive moisturising lotion.
Will there be any reactions following a reflexology treatment?
After a reflexology treatment people generally feel calm and relaxed and find they sleep very well. Reflexology works to improve circulation, cleanse the body and expel toxins and impurities from the body so any reactions to treatment will result from your body trying to heal itself and expel impurities.
As with all complementary therapies it is recommended that plenty of fluids, preferably water, are consumed following a treatment. This allows the easy removal of toxins and impurities from your system. |
